Welcome to Eastern Silos Limited (ESL). We are proud to be at the forefront of the Produce Sector in Uganda and the East African region. We work with local communities to build long-term partnerships to create positive change and growth.
We are committed to supporting the production, processing and marketing of produce, along with training and facilitating local producers in a dedicated effort to instil best practice to drive production, quality and access to markets.
ESL has been a long time coming; born from the need to tap the enormous potential present in the largely arable land in the region, which, while it supports production of a diverse range of produce, remains underutilised due to lack of knowledge, support and rewards from proceeds from the produce. The following are just some of the areas and ways ESL plays the vital role to bring about improvement in the sector:
- Improvement of post-harvest practices
- Facilitate access to technology and equipment, including tarpaulins, moisture meters and silos.
- Best practices in harvesting, drying, sorting and grading of grain.
- Improvement of storage practices and facilities.
- Promoting the long-term sustainability of the produce sector.
- Incentivising farmers to increase their surpluses, thereby raising household incomes and living standards.
One of our Key Objectives is Value Addition at Source.
Our model is simple. It is built on the principles of equitable success - Win-Win approach for producers, proprietors and consumers of Produce.
According to UN statistics, Agriculture is the major economic activity for 75 percent of Ugandans, and most of the farming is subsistence.
The Annual Agriculture Survey (AAS) 2018 reported that that the agricultural sector is the largest employer in Uganda and it remains essential to secure the livelihood of the Ugandan population. ESL is committed to be a key player in this sector, working with farmers and partners as a key pillar in the sector.
While successive governments have encouraged commercialisation of agriculture, the country still lacks viable models for best practices, education and assistance to farmers to tap into existing regional and international markets.
ESL is committed to intervene and play a vital part in supporting farmers to achieve high quality of produce and benefit from fair returns from the sale of their produce. This is the ESL Mission.
Using our position of influence, we lobby government for policies that support the produce industry, and we are in a good position to reach out to non-government and intergovernmental organisations to promote partnerships for joint working and development of the produce sector.
We operate decentralised farms in all regions of the country to harness the unique potential each region offers, managed by our well-trained regional managers. In addition to our own produce, our Network of Field Extension staff who traverse villages, identifying market needs and providing a range of communication and learning activities organised for the farmers and rural communities.
We take the market to the farmers - where it is needed.
