Atuta Projects is an ESL innovative mission for exploitation of perenially unutilised strips of land between owners. The project encourages effective utilisation of land that would otherwise remain wasted.
"Atuta" - (Ateso word for the isle of land acting as the boundary between two owners), has often, remained unused for as long as it has existed, making it virgin and potentially valuable for productive planting.
While it is traditionally left intact as the boundary between owners, this largely undisturbed land holds potential value and can be utilised for productive tree plating, while still forming the demarcation between owners. The trees planted serve a triple purpose of economic value, greening the environment, and as boundary markers.
An example of value chain that can be obtained from this otherwise redundant land is cashew nut trees. The trees do not only provide demarcation, shading and cover, they also provide food and drink, delivering a value chain to the owners and for the planet.
